Goods storage: Rent storage space for goods

If you want to temporarily store your goods, you can rent a space for this. You often have a choice of different sizes, depending on the amount of items you want to store temporarily. There are several providers on the market where you can rent (temporary) space. What exactly does storing goods entail? You can also have goods collected and delivered by third parties.

What does goods storage entail?

Some companies arrange the entire storage of goods for you, with others you can arrange it all yourself. The term ‘Self Storage’ implies the latter. The rental company makes the space available and you arrange the rest. You can often choose from permanent or temporary storage of goods. You can also choose the storage period yourself; you pay for the space rental per week or per month. The rental company will advise you on the space required for the items you want to store.

Transport of goods

Most rental companies can provide a trailer for transporting the goods. It is also sometimes possible for the company to rent a van for you, or even arrange the entire move, so that you do not have to arrange it yourself. Packing has also been taken into account. You can often also get packing materials from the company you rent a space from. This material often consists of boxes, but sometimes it is possible to purchase a package, especially for certain rooms in a house or a certain type of home. You can often take the goods to the storage space yourself by car. This is possible at the so-called drive-in storage spaces.

Which goods are you allowed to store?

In principle you can store all types of goods. You can think of, for example, complete furnishings, stock products, archive contents, clothing. What you are not allowed to store are goods that:

  • be flammable
  • are perishable
  • be illegal

The storage space

The size of the space in which you want to store goods usually starts from 1m3. Various sizes can be rented, up to 100m3. Depending on the goods you want to store, you can choose a certain size. You can also get advice from the rental company. Most of the spaces you can rent are well secured . This is done through video surveillance and good locks on the doors. Some companies use a PIN code to gain access to the rooms. In general, most areas are accessible every day from early in the morning to late in the evening. There is also often heating available, which keeps the moisture percentage in the rooms low and the items are better preserved.

Storage insurance, notice period and payment

Insurance

The stored goods are covered by your own home contents insurance. Depending on which insurer you are with and which additional agreements you have made, coverage is well arranged. Before you want to store goods, it is wise to read the insurance conditions carefully and take measures where necessary.

Notice period

If you rent (temporarily) a storage space, this will be contractually recorded in a rental agreement. This agreement states a period during which you rent the space. If the end of the rental period is approaching and you do nothing, it is often tacitly extended. If you no longer want to rent the space, you must be careful that you cancel the rental on time.

Pay

At most rental companies you can pay by direct debit. This often happens per month. If you need packing materials, you can purchase them at the counter of the relevant company. Payment options there are generally by credit card, debit card and cash.

Have goods collected or delivered by third parties

With some rental companies you can agree that a supplier of your goods can deliver them directly to the storage space. The rental company then arranges the handling of the receipt of the goods and takes care of storage. The other way around is also possible. You then agree that a third party can collect your goods from the storage space.
