Allowance for study costs for teachers and lecturers

Anyone who wants to become a teacher in 2020 – 2021 can use the study costs allowance for teachers and lecturers, a kind of teacher grant. Anyone who follows a teacher training course as a student, transfer student or contractor or wants to broaden their professional knowledge as a teacher may be eligible for the allowance for teachers. The condition for this compensation is that you are not entitled to student finance. Because it is a gift, you do not have to pay anything back. Also consider the possibility of extra money through the civil servants loan.

Allowance for study costs for teachers and lecturers

Not being entitled to student finance or allowance for students and still wanting to follow a teacher training course means that you may be entitled to the teacher allowance. Additional conditions are that:

  • You are Dutch or equivalent or come from another EU/EEA country.
  • You are following a teacher training course or a teacher training course in secondary education or vocational education. This training must provide a first- or second-degree qualification.

The subsidy stops if you stop studying. If you apply for the subsidy during a year, the monthly payment of the subsidy starts after your application, so you will receive less than if you apply at the beginning of the academic year. Unlike student finance, you do not have to pay anything back, even if you stop your studies prematurely.

Allowance for study costs for teachers is income-related

The teacher allowance is income-related. The allowance for the year 2020-2021 is based on the joint income from 2018. If your income is now significantly lower, you can ask DUO to take a different income into account. The maximum compensation is possible if the joint income in 2018 did not exceed 36,089 (academic year 2020-2021). The allowance decreases with higher income. You can receive compensation for a maximum of 24 months and must use it for 48 months. You will receive the entire amount in one go. The teacher allowance is a gift.

Income test for teachers

It is striking that the year 2018 is automatically used for the income test if you want an allowance for the year 2020-2021 and not the income of 2019. It is tested whether the stated income is actually correct and has not been adjusted. At your request, a different reference year for income can also be chosen, for example 2018 or 2019. This is possible if your income has become structurally much lower due to a sharp drop in your income. Consider the consequences of disability, bankruptcy or dismissal. The reduction must be at least 15 percent over three years. If that situation arises, you can probably get a higher teacher allowance and avoid not being eligible for the subsidy. You are entitled to the compensation for a maximum of 24 months and must use this right within four years at the latest. You apply for the allowance from the Education Executive Agency, DUO.

Teacher allowance 2020 – 2021

The maximum amounts for 2020 – 2021 are:

  • Course or tuition fees: 567.23.
  • School costs: 761.23.
  • Total: 1,328.46.

Civil servants loan

Teachers, just like other civil servants, can take out a civil servant loan relatively cheaply. Life is expensive and civil servants are seen as very trustworthy by banks and institutions. For them there is the civil servant loan, which has more favorable conditions than a normal loan and, above all, a lower interest rate. The civil servant loan can be a normal loan but also a civil servant mortgage. Anyone who already has a part-time job as a teacher can also inquire there. Don’t forget that quite a few study costs can be tax deductible. Studying is expensive enough as it is.

Apply for a teacher grant for a master’s degree

A teacher grant is something different from the allowance. You can apply for the teacher grant if you have a teaching qualification and teach at least 20%. This concerns an amount of a few thousand euros, with up to 7,000 euros possible for a master’s degree in science, mathematics, physics and chemistry, post-initial master’s courses, pre-master’s courses and courses at the NCOI, the LOI and the Open University. The subsidy for professional competence in physical education will amount to a maximum of 3,500 euros in 2020 and 2021.
