Many Dutch people think they need additional health insurance. However, this does not always have to be the case. It can save hundreds of euros to have additional insurance, but it can also save money not to have additional insurance. Every Dutch person aged eighteen and older is obliged to take out basic insurance with a health insurer. In addition to this basic insurance, it is also possible to take out additional insurance, for example to be entitled to physiotherapy or dental costs.
The basic insurance covers the costs of medical treatment. Some treatments are fully reimbursed, others partially. This is stated in the law.
Additional health insurance
Do you need a medical check or do you wear glasses? Then it may be more economical to take out additional health insurance. Supplementary health insurance covers the costs of a number of specific treatments that have been put together in a package by the insurer.
Do I need additional health insurance?
Many people think that they need additional health insurance. They are usually afraid that they otherwise run the risk of high bills. This fear is not necessary, because you can easily check whether you need additional health insurance! Take the following steps:
Put on paper what care is needed
Work out on paper what care you think you need. For example, do you have a lot of cavities, or not? Do you need psychological help or do you not need to be insured for these treatments?
Investigate the costs of the additional insurance
Check the website of your insurance company to see what the costs of additional insurance are.
Investigate the costs of the expected care required
List the costs of the expected care required and compare them with the costs of additional insurance. Also take into account the fact that some costs are only reimbursed by insurers once in an x number of years.
Look at what is most beneficial
Is it cheaper to take out additional insurance, or not? Make a choice during this step. If additional insurance costs you more, it is not wise to take one out.
Put money aside
If you choose not to take out additional insurance, it is most likely useful to put money aside in case care is needed. The wisest thing is to put the money you save in the first year (by not taking out additional insurance) in a savings account and only use it when necessary. Also keep in mind that the deductible for the basic insurance in 2013 is €350. It is therefore useful to put this amount aside anyway.
