Absence registration saves on employee expenses

During the working life of employees, they become ill and often get better again. Health is an expensive commodity and people therefore need time to recover properly in the event of illness. However, not every form of absenteeism is due to a specific illness. It can also be caused by problems at work or at home that leave that employee unable to cope. If things escalate, people may end up with psychological problems at home, meaning the employee will have to continue to be paid for a long time. How can registration help to save on costs?

Why are people at home?

Employees are only human! People must be able to get along with each other and management. Many circumstances in the workplace can cause friction and dissatisfaction. In addition, there may be collective dissatisfaction, which worsens the overall mood. Several causes can lead to staff sitting at home. A situation with the employer that gets out of hand can cause a lot of stress, causing absenteeism. If nothing is done, the situation can worsen, resulting in an employee staying at home for a long time.

Recognizing problems

Problems can be solved. As an employer, it is then necessary to quickly realize that certain employees, on average, spend more time at home than other employees. By registering how often and when certain people are at home, insight into problem cases can be gained. It is important that the employer responds to the circumstance by determining why the employee is regularly absent. Are there problems at home or do you suffer from bullying at work? All types of problems can cause it. If it has been recognized within the registration that someone has a problem, we can work on it together.

Work on solutions in a timely manner

Quick intervention in a problem situation ensures that people do not end up stuck at home for a long time. Solutions can ensure that the working situation is improved, so that the employee feels more at home. It is important that the employer listens to the problems of the staff in order to find solutions. This allows the employee to quickly resume his tasks. Motivated employees always deliver better results and so the employer must intervene in a timely manner by providing solutions.

Preventing absenteeism from becoming illness

It may happen that a manager is not aware of the problems of employees. They have an employment contract and therefore the staff must work. So it’s not that simple! Some managers miss the point completely, causing the situation to worsen. Threatening with dismissal is also not an option, because this is not permitted by law. An employer is always wise to have an internal contact person where employee problems can be discussed openly. This allows problems to be identified at an early stage before they worsen. In addition, a problem case can be addressed through registration, so that any problems can be resolved.

The Expansion of the Obligation to Continue Payment of Wages in the Event of Illness Act

The problem for the employer is actually that the WULBZ is included in labor law. This law states that employers must continue to pay seventy percent of the last earned wage to a sick employee for up to two years. This can therefore be quite costly in the event of long-term absence. In addition, a sick employee may never be dismissed due to his illness during those two years. In other words, the interests of the employees are well regulated and the employer is therefore wise to raise problems quickly.

Absence registration leads to cost savings

Timely recognition of problem cases within the group of absentees can lead to good solutions. Regardless of the problem, solutions can always be discussed or a solution can be worked through through mediation. In this way, the employee can remain active within the employment process, so that the employer does not incur any ongoing costs. Applying a correct registration policy ensures that you save on unnecessary expenses caused by misunderstood and untreated absenteeism.

Dismissal due to illness is not allowed

The question is often asked whether a sick employee can be dismissed if he or she is at home. This is indeed not allowed if the reason concerns the illness or absenteeism itself. The employee is therefore in a weakened situation, possibly on doctor’s advice and has difficulty defending himself. In order to be able to provide an income, one cannot be fired. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, namely the following:

  • the sick employee has done something inexcusable or has made a serious mistake consciously or unconsciously. The urgent reason may lead to immediate dismissal. Please note that the reason must be thoroughly demonstrated, and there must be no relationship with the disease as the reason;
  • the employer goes bankrupt, leaving everyone collectively on the street;
  • the employee resigns himself.

Apart from these reasons, an employee cannot and may not be dismissed during the illness.
