In principle, anyone can register with the Chamber of Commerce. They are not about municipal zoning plans, tax authorities and so on. However, the Chamber of Commerce and the tax authorities do work together, so you can choose to register directly with the tax authorities.
When are you a company?
It is difficult to determine when you are officially a business and when you are pursuing a hobby. In any case, all income will have to be reported to the tax authorities. There is a guideline that if you put more than 1250 hours per year into the business, it falls under a company. Income does not count, which is why companies sometimes close due to debts. However, if you have a company, you are obliged to register with the Chamber of Commerce. The government would like to know how many companies there are. If you do not register, you are in violation and can expect a fine.
Arrival at the Chamber of Commerce
You can register at various Chamber of Commerce points in the Netherlands. You do not need to make an appointment, but it is recommended that you arrive as early as possible, as there are quite a few people starting a business in one day, so it can be busy. You will receive a number and perhaps a form. On this form you can enter how much income you expect and the number of customers after a year. It is wise to think about this in advance. This form is important for the tax authorities. When your number appears, you will be picked up by one of the employees.
In principle, you only need to bring a valid ID to register. Of course, you don’t just start a business, it is wise to have a business plan drawn up and in any case you should be able to indicate what the company name will be. If you have any questions about the company, you can ask the employee. At the end of the conversation, various forms will be signed and you will take home proof that you are a company.
Deregistration or change
Once you have registered, you can have your details changed at any time. The Chamber of Commerce has various forms and one of them requires amendment. You cannot therefore have changes communicated by telephone. The same also applies to unsubscribing. You can unsubscribe at any time, but this is also done via a form.
The extract you receive from the Chamber of Commerce when you register costs 11 euros. The annual costs of the Chamber of Commerce differ per region, but it is around 40 to 45 euros.
