AH, payment date of wages and employee discount

When Albert Heijn was 22 years old, Albert Heijn took over his father’s grocery store. Albert Heijn’s father’s grocery store was in Oostzaan. The store in Oostzaan had an area of 12 m2 of business space. To increase turnover, Albert Heijn went to the people. Albert Heijn’s wife took care of sales in the store. That was already the case in 1887 and today everything at Albert Heijn revolves around teamwork. The teamwork is still carried out for a defensible reward.

Ahold Delhaze

Albert Heijn’s parent company is Ahold Delhaze and, according to a study by the Nature & Environment Foundation, Ahold Delhaze is the greenest listed company in the Netherlands.

Everything at Albert Heijn is about teamwork!

Not only the work in the stores but also the distribution is teamwork! Distribution centers have been set up in the Netherlands for this purpose and more than 800 Albert Heijn stores are supplied from these distribution centers. In daily practice, the distribution teams in the distribution centers form an indispensable link between the supplier and the eight hundred stores. Our own delivery service provides excellent service to the eight hundred stores every day. Very good service has always remained the core of Albert Heijn’s business operations.

The world of distribution

Albert Heijn has been at the forefront of the world of distribution since 1887. Albert Heijn is therefore always looking for the latest technological developments. For example, a system has been developed with voice recognition for order pickers and Albert Heijn has the most advanced forklift trucks in the world. In addition to the most modern systems for ordering and order composition and the associated planning, Albert Heijn’s distribution still remains one of the secrets behind the success of this very important employer. Albert Heijn’s distribution centers are located in Geldermalsen, Nieuwegein, Pijnacker, Tilburg, Zaandam and Zwolle.

Very attractive employment conditions are therefore logical

If you start working at Albert Heijn Distribution, everything must be perfectly arranged for the new employee. A good basic salary always remains the primary need of every employee. In addition, it is nice if an employee is eligible for hefty allowances. For example, for shift work and working with flexible working hours. But benefit schemes, such as discounts on groceries and mobile phone calls, are also a decisive factor for many people to work at Albert Heijn. Employees are also entitled to ADV and holiday days. For example, if an employee works full-time, he or she is entitled to 24 days’ holiday and 19 days’ reduction in working hours (ADV).

Important employment conditions

In addition to the salary, an Albert Heijn employee is entitled to:

  • compensation for travel costs;
  • good pension scheme;
  • vacation days
  • ADV (reduction of working hours).

Extra benefits from working at Albert Heijn

In addition to the most important employment conditions, Albert Heijn also has a number of important secondary employment conditions. These are:

  • discount on groceries at Albert Heijn;
  • discount on AH Mobiel;
  • discount on insurance;

  • education and training;
  • learning-working programs for secondary vocational education and higher professional education;
  • traineeships for recently graduated university students.

Working and learning

As an employer, Albert Heijn takes its responsibility. In this way, Albert Heijn creates extra jobs for people who are distanced from the labor market. Young people with WAJONG benefits can also work at AH for this reason. Every employee has their own qualities and capabilities and to help these people further, special training modules have been developed so that they can learn according to their own abilities. Support is also available to help students obtain a diploma. Free professional homework assistance is also possible in some stores. After all, a diploma gives a better start on the labor market.

collective labor agreement

All these employment conditions are laid down in a collective labor agreement (CAO). Albert Heijn has four collective labor agreements for its staff.

  • The supermarket collective labor agreement (VGL) covers cashiers, quality employees and shelf stackers in an AH supermarket. This supermarket must be owned by Albert Heijn bv
  • The supermarkets collective labor agreement for foodstuffs includes cashiers, quality employees and stockers in an AH supermarket. This supermarket is then owned by an Albert Heijn franchisee.
  • The Albert Heijn Shop Management Collective Labor Agreement covers employees who work as managers or assistant managers in an AH supermarket.
  • Employees who work in an AH distribution center are covered by the Albert Heijn Distribution Centers Collective Labor Agreement .

The reward

Many people work at Albert Heijn with a part-time job. A job that is very well paid. Employees with a contract of up to 12 hours per week will receive ADV, holiday pay, vacation days and profit distribution every four weeks directly with the payment of their salary. This is very attractive and the salary amount to be received will therefore be higher. Travel expenses will also be paid. Albert Heijn also has a pension scheme. For example, an employee in a filling team, a sales team or a cash register team receives a gross amount per hour for a contract of less than 12 hours of:

The current collective labor agreement runs from April 1, 2017 and is a 2-year collective labor agreement with a term from April 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. The wage changes during the term of this collective labor agreement are:

  • 2.50% salary increase as of December 31, 2019
  • 1.6% pay increase as of March 1, 2020

Minimum wage

Albert Heijn pays its employees more than the minimum wage. The amount of the wage is regulated in the supermarket collective labor agreement. The applicable collective employment conditions can be found in the Supermarkt-VGL collective labor agreement. The wages in the Supermarket-VGL collective labor agreement are higher than the wages set by the central government. The statutory minimum hourly wages are included in the table below and usually change on January 1 and July 1.

Change in minimum wage age

July 1, 2019, the government has lowered the age at which employees receive the full minimum wage to 21 years. This means that 21-year-olds have the right to a full statutory minimum wage. The established amounts of the statutory minimum wage apply for a full working week. The collective labor agreements that AH has made with the trade unions state how long a normal working week lasts. According to the collective labor agreement, a full working week in supermarkets is 40 hours.

If you work for a franchise entrepreneur, it is not impossible that the franchise entrepreneur in question uses different amounts and dates and the employment conditions may also be different. The date of transfer to your bank account also depends on the bank you have.

Employee discount

Influencing turnover is very easy for Albert Heijn. That is why Albert Heijn makes it very attractive for Albert Heijn staff to (continue to) do their shopping at Albert Heijn. Every quarter, 10% of the employee’s purchase amount is deposited back into the bank account of the employee in question. The maximum amount paid to an employee is set at 75 per quarter. An employee can therefore do shopping for 750 at Albert Heijn. Converted, the average amount of a purchase is 8.24 per calendar day or 57.69 per week. As a result, the purchase then becomes an arithmetic average of 250 per calendar month. These discount amounts are of course only deposited into the bank account of the employee in question with the payment of the salary at the end of each quarter. Albert Heijn employees also receive a discount on AH mobile, insurance and can participate in (sports) clinics for free.

The special employee bonus card

So if you work at Albert Heijn, you get a staff discount with every purchase you make. The employee discount is 10% on all shopping you do at AH. The special employee bonus card is scanned for this purpose with every purchase. So you receive a 10% employee discount on all shopping you do at Albert Heijn and also on shopping you do at Albert Heijn Online. However, not about purchases from Etos and Gall&Gall. The employee discount has a maximum of €75 per quarter. The discount is therefore 4 X 75, so a maximum of 300 per calendar year. The nice thing about working at AH is that the maximum discount amounts are the same for full-time and part-time employees.

Employee benefit exception

The benefit for AH staff does not apply to holiday workers. The employees of Albert Heijn in Belgium also do not receive the employee benefit.

Exceptions to employee discounts

It is a pity that the AH Personnel Benefit does not apply to holiday employees nor to Albert Heijn employees in Belgium. In addition, no discount is given on purchases for:

  1. AH gift vouchers.
  2. AH Savings Stamps,
  3. books,
  4. medicines,
  5. lottery tickets,
  6. postage stamps,
  7. comic cards,
  8. tobacco articles,
  9. infant formula 0-12 months.

Payment of the employee discount in 2022

Employees at Albert Heijn receive a discount on their purchases at Albert Heijn and Albert Heijn Online. However, not about purchases at ETOS and GALL&GALL. The employee discount is 10% on the purchase price of the groceries. The 10% is credited to the special employee bonus card that is scanned as soon as you want to pay for the groceries. The maximum amount of the employee discount is set at €75 per quarter. However, the employee discount cannot exceed a maximum of €300 per calendar year per year. Furthermore, the maximum amount of the discount amounts determined per quarter and per calendar year is the same for employees who work full-time and part-time. In principle it can be assumed that the payment dates in 2022 are:

  1. on Monday, January 31 for the fourth quarter of the previous calendar year.
  2. on April 25 for the first quarter of the current calendar year.
  3. on July 18 for the second quarter of the current calendar year.
  4. on November 7 for the third quarter of the current calendar year.
  5. on January 30, 2023 for the fourth quarter of the previous calendar year.
